Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the population of older adults in the U.S. rising while the child population declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older grew by 13%, as the number under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older adult population has expanded considerably in the last hundred years, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
Research from 2021 reports that almost half of this demographic—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and support. The findings also estimate that more than one-third may ultimately require care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, who serves as executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
