Michigan City Announces Special Events For 2023!
Michigan City Special Events and Mayor Duane Parry are excited to announce the 2023 Michigan City Special Events schedule,
highlighted by the return of The Singing Sands Sand Sculpting Festival and Oktoberfest.
"Last year we had an incredible event line-up," said Mayor Parry. "The Singing Sands Sand Sculpting Festival was a huge
success and we are confident that the event will grow and become one of the premiere events in the region. Our parades
are getting bigger and better, and the return of Oktoberfest shows we are bouncing back and moving forward. Michigan
City is the place to be!"
Eight major events will shape the Michigan City Special Events schedule, beginning with the annual Michigan City St.
Patrick's Day Parade on March 11. The parade will follow the traditional Franklin St. route, heading north from 9th St. to
4th St. Next on the schedule will be the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8, held in Washington Park.
The return of the Singing Sands Sand Sculpting Festival is set for June 9-11 in Washington Park, bringing back some of the
world's most talented sand sculptors to create beautiful works of art and showcase Michigan City's beautiful lakefront.
"We are so excited to bring this sand sculpting event back," said Special Events Director Terry Greetham. "In addition to
the master and semi-professional competition we will be announcing a new amateur competition which will allow local
groups, organizations and companies to compete for a chance to win money for their favorite local charity. Not only will
this create a lot of excitement around the event, but it will allow us to give back to those community organizations that
need our support," he said.
The annual patriotic celebration will follow, beginning with the Kiddie Parade on Saturday, June 24, the Patriotic Parade
on Saturday, July 1, capped off by the Fireworks Spectacular in Washington Park on Tuesday, July 4.
Labor Day weekend, September 1-4, will again see the return of Oktoberfest to Washington Park. Last year's event was
another huge success and the plan for 2023 is bigger and better. "Oktoberfest made a great return last year, and we are
ready to take it to the next level," Greetham said. "We want to expand the vendor area, bring in a few more food options,
and hopefully have some more options for the kids. We have a lot of work to do, but I think we have a great foundation
to build on."
The final event on the City's special event schedule will be the Festival of Lights Celebration on December 2. The Festival
of Lights Parade will again welcome Santa Claus followed by the lighting of the Christmas Tree. The celebration will
continue with the annual Chili Challenge and much more.
In addition to the Michigan City Special Events sponsored activities will be the Shelf Ice Brewfest on February 25, presented
by the Michigan City Main Street Association. The LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau will present the
Michigan City Aquax Grand Prix July 8 & 9, and the Great Lakes Grand Prix August 2-6, both in Washington Park.
