Crimson Wave Women’s Volleyball goes 3-1 in 19 total sets at Goshen Tri-Meet
The Calumet College Women's Volleyball team traveled to Goshen College for a 2-day tri-meet against Rochester University and the Maple Leafs. The Crimson Wave won their first match of the season Friday in 5 sets against Rochester, followed by another 5 set match against Goshen, but lost in the final set. On Saturday, the Wave played another 9 sets but came out victorious with a 3-2 win over Rochester and a 3-1 win over Goshen to finish 3-1 overall on the weekend.
Day 1
CCSJ 3, Rochester 2 (25-19,22-25,25-21,19-25,15-6)
The Crimson Wave started off each set ahead of the Warriors, gaining their momentum early, but the difference maker would come toward the end of the sets. The Wave bounced back and forth with Rochester on which team won each set, but in the fifth and final set, CCSJ dominated with a 15-6 win.
The Crimson Wave had double-digit kills from Maria Elena Castorena (24 kills), Diana Ortuno (17 kills), Makayla Watts had 4 blocks, and a huge 56 assists from Rebecca Larios through 5 sets.
Goshen 3, CCSJ 2 (21-25, 25-18,25-21,24-26,15-12)
In the Wave's only loss of the weekend, CCSJ started off strong with a first-set win but lost the second and third sets to force two more sets. In the fourth set, the Wave fought back and won 26-24, but couldn't finish ahead in the shortened fifth set as Goshen took the win 15-12.
Castorena and Ortuno both finished the match with 13 kills, Castorena with 8 digs and 2 blocks, and Ortuno with 6 digs and 2 blocks. Larios had 45 assists with 13 digs, and Jenine Boyles had 5 blocks with 12 digs.
Day 2
CCSJ 3, Rochester 2 (19-25,30-28,25-19,22-25,15-12)
In a high-scoring match, the Crimson Wave were down the first set after errors but made a strong comeback in a second set 30-28 win and third set 25-19 win. In the fourth set, the Wave started off behind and couldn't quite catch up at the end, losing 25-22. The fifth and final set was back and forth between CCSJ and Rochester, with the Wave securing the last few points to take the 15-12 win.
Ortuno led the Wave this match with 25 kills and 4 blocks. Castorena had 24 kills with 26 blocks, Watts had 5 blocks, Sincere Northern had 11 kills with 2 blocks, Boyles had 21 digs and 3 blocks, and Larios had 65 assists with 14 digs.
CCSJ 3, Goshen 1 (25-21,23-25,25-21,26-24)
In the final match of the weekend, the Crimson Wave had a come-from-behind first-set win of 25-21. The Maple Leafs slowly overtook the Wave in the second set for a close 25-23 win to bring the score to 1-1. The Crimson Wave jumped ahead early in the third set but several long streaks for Goshen put them back in the running. The Wave held onto their lead long enough to win the third set 25-21. In the fourth and final set, the Wave had a slow start, but after a tie at 13's the Crimson Wave held a small lead over Goshen. The final score came down to the last few services, and the Wave took a two-point lead to win 26-24.
Castorena led the Wave with 22 kills, 20 digs, and 2 blocks. Ortuno was close behind with 17 kills, Northern had 7 kills with 12 digs and 2 blocks, and Larios had 49 assists with 15 digs to help the Wave finish 3-1 against Goshen.
