Women's Basketball wins overtime thriller in "The Mane Event"

The Purdue Northwest women's basketball defeated Lake Superior State in an overtime thriller in GLIAC action during "The Mane Event" for Homecoming 2023 presented by Purdue Federal Credit Union on Thursday evening, 90-85.

The Basics

   •  Records: Purdue Northwest (7-15,3-9), Lake Superior State (5-15,2-10)

   •  Location: John Friend Court - Hammond, Ind.

   •  Attendance: 600

Laborer Local 41 Player of the Game: Junior Dash Shaw (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) - Tied game-high 28 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Inside The Numbers

   •Junior Tadriana Heard (Justice, Ill./Argo) added 19 points and dished out a career-high 11 assists.

   •Junior Abbie McDowell (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) scored 13 points during the game.

   •Sophomore Kylie Schmidt (Francis Creek, Wis./Mishicot) chipped in 12 points off the bench.

   •As a team, the Pride finished the contest shooting 30-of-65 (46.2%) from the field and went 7-of-16 (43.8%) from          behind the arc.

   •Margot Woughter led Lake Superior State with game-best tying 28 points.

   •As a team, the Lakers ended the game going 30-of-58 (51.7%) from the floor and shot 7-of-18 (38.9%) from deep.

The Breakdown

•The Lakers started the game fast and took a 24-16 lead after one period.

•Lake Superior State continued their first half of play and went into halftime with a big 44-29 lead.

•In the second half, with 7:28 left in the third period, the was in the hands of Lake Superior State 53-33. But the Pride did not give up.

•Purdue Northwest fought back to cut it to single digits, 59-50, with less then four minutes remaining in the third.

•The Lakers held tough and got the lead back to double digits to end the third up 65-53 heading into the all important fourth period.

•What a fourth period it was. The Pride went on a massive, 19-7 run to tie the game up at 72-72 with four minutes remaining.

•With a minute left and the game tied at 77-77, Woughter of the Lakers made a floater to give them the lead with three seconds remaining.

•The Pride drew up the perfect out of the bounds play and saw Schmidt hit the game-tying layup as time expired making it, 79-79.

•Both teams fought back-and-forth in the overtime period but saw the Pride make key shots and free throws down the stretch to seal the overtime victory, 90-85.

•Purdue Northwest dominated in the paint, 46-38.

•The Pride made most of their fast break opportunities holding the advantage, 21-3.

•The Lakers held a slight advantage in rebounds, 32-31.

•In the fourth quarter, the Pride outscored Lake Superior State, 26-14.

•Purdue Northwest did well at the charity stripe going 23-of-28 on the evening.
