Crimson Wave Women’s Volleyball drops season opener at MVC Tri-Meet
The Calumet College Women's Volleyball team opened their season Saturday at Missouri Valley College with a Tri-Meet against MVC and Kansas Wesleyan. The Crimson Wave lost to MVC 3-1 and to KWU 3-0 but showed improvements throughout the day.
MVC 3, CCSJ 1 ( 25-14, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19)
The Crimson Wave were slow to score in the first and second sets, losing set one 25-14 and set two 25-13. In the third set, MVC controlled the beginning of the game but the Crimson Wave came back and took control of the set. Tying the set at 16-16, the Crimson Wave went back and forth with the Vikings until the Wave took a 22-19 lead. Holding off MVC, the Crimson Wave extended the match with a third set win, 25-22.
In the fourth and final set, the Wave stayed right on the Vikings' tail until MVC took a 21-13 lead. The Crimson Wave kept fighting until the Vikings closed out the set with a 25-19 win, dropping their first game of the season 3-1.
Maria Elena Castorena led the way for the Crimson Wave with 10 kills, 4 digs, and 2 blocks. Rebecca Larios had 21 assists with 3 service aces, 4 digs, and 3 blocks. Jenine Boyles had 4 kills with 2 service aces, 3 digs, and 3 blocks.
KWU 3, CCSJ 0 (25-22,25-11,25-22)
The opening set of the Wave's second match was a game of back and forth until the Crimson Wave took a 19-15 lead. The Wave lead got up to 21-17 until KWU scored a streak of points to tie the set up at 21-21. The Crimson Wave tied the set up again at 22's, but were held back by the Coyotes, losing the first set by a close 25-22 margin. In the second set, KWU jumped ahead of the Wave early and maintained a steady lead to win the set 25-11.
The Crimson Wave led the third and final set 7-3, but KWU rallied and took the lead at 12-11. As the teams went back and forth, point-for-point, the Coyotes and Wave tied the set up at 20 for the final time as KWU jumped ahead and won the final set 25-22.
Castorena led the way for the Wave again, with 13 kills, 2 service aces, 8 digs, and 1 block. Larios was moving throughout the court with 33 assists with 4 digs through the three sets. Diana Ortuno had 8 kills for the Wave and Sincere Northern had 7 kills with 3 service aces and 1 block.
