Crimson Wave Sprint Football takes down undefeated SMWC in rivalry rematch
Same game, different ending.
The Calumet College Sprint Football (3-0, 3-1) team traveled to Terre Haute for a rematch against their instate rival, St. Mary-of-the-Woods (3-0,4-0). In their last meeting as the season opener, the Crimson Wave were defeated 34-28 in overtime but after winning 3 straight games the Wave anxiously awaited the opportunity for a rematch.
The Pomeroys scored first to take a 7-0 lead over the Wave in the 1st Quarter, and that was the lone touchdown of the 1st Quarter.
One minute into the 2nd Quarter, the Crimson Wave got close enough downfield for Jared Saez to kick a 32-yard Field Goal to put the Wave on the board as SMWC led 7-3. The Pomeroys countered minutes later with another touchdown to lead the Wave 14-3. Calumet College scored their first touchdown with 8:52 left on the clock as Elijah Antis rushed 40-yards and Saez had a good extra points kick to close the score gap to 14-10. With 4 minutes left in the half, QB Blaze Cano made a 24-yard pass to Robert Shegog and Saez's extra points kick was good to give the Wave a 17-14 lead going into halftime.
The 3rd Quarter was a defensive battle for both teams, but the Crimson Wave overcame the Pomeroys defense as Saez kicked a 22-yard Field Goal to increase the Wave's lead to 20-14. With one minute left in the 3rd, Jonathan Flemings ran in for a 5-yard touchdown. Saez's good extra points kick and Flemings' touchdown put the Wave at their biggest lead over SMWC of the game at 27-14.
The Pomeroys had their first touchdown since the 2nd Quarter 3 minutes into the 4th Quarter to cut the Wave's lead down to 27-21. With 7 minutes left in the quarter, SMWC scored again, but the extra points kick was declined, leaving the game tied 27-27. Similar to the two teams' last meetings, a tie game in the final minutes of the 4th Quarter had the possibility of overtime looming, but the Crimson Wave had different plans. CCSJ couldn't quite get to the endzone, but with 3:54 left on the clock Saez set up for a 42-yard Field Goal opportunity. The Pomeroys tried to get through the Crimson Wave defense but were unsuccessful as Saez had a line drive kick to just clear the goalposts to put CCSJ up 30-27 in the final minutes of the game. The Pomeroys final possession of the game was halted as Quindarius Davis intercepted an SMWC pass and returned for 29-yards to give CCSJ the ball and seconds to kill till they celebrated their 30-27 win over the undefeated St. Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys.
