JOB POSTING: Bookkeeper

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One to three years experience working in office administration
  • Must pass typing test, Drug and Alcohol Screen, Background Check, Voice Stress Analysis and Psychological Evaluation
  • Ability to operate a fax machine, copy machine and calculator efficiently
  • Computer knowledge: PC, Excel, Word, and WordPerfect a must
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as vendor bills, operating and maintenance contracts, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to compute rates, percents and to prepare ledgers and reports from same
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills in both written and verbal communication
Job Duties:

  • Verifies, allocates, and posts details of business transactions to subsidiary accounts in journals or computer files from documents such as sales slips, invoices, receipts, check stubs, and computer printouts
  • Summarizes details in separate ledgers or computer files and transfers data to general ledger
  • Reconciles and balances accounts
  • Keeps accounts current
  • Processes purchase orders
  • Compiles reports to statistics such as cash receipts and expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and other items pertinent to operation of business
  • Maintains records of fleet automobiles for licensing and insurance purposes
  • Have ability to sort mail and distribute to other departments as needed
  • Answers telephone and answers questions or directs caller to appropriate party
  • Types correspondence and other records such as purchase orders and letter
  • Maintains accurate filing system
  • Processes Employers Report of Injury/Illness of employee (Workmen’s Compensation) with the state
  • Preparation of annual Police Department budget
  • Handles Educational Reimbursements and Annual Reporting for Federal Seizure Fund
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Performs other duties as required
Hiring will be done in accordance with Hammond City Ordinance #8620 as it pertains to the residency requirement.
